barabensis-type 2CY, February 24 2001, Ashkar harbour, Bahrain.

Barabensis class II 1st winter or maybe heuglini.

High-based bill, rounded head point to barabensis. This, combined with the ongoing moult in the wing coverts seems to rule out cachinnans. Primaries are bleached and the juvenile coverts show worn fringes and abraded tips. The tail is still juvenile. Old 2nd generation scapulars and inner coverts now show a grey base, brownish upper half and a black shaft. Recently moulted feathers show an anchor pattern; the sub-terminal band running up along the fringe. Upper two tertials moulted to 2nd generation, lower tertials dark brown, tips worn away.
