Lesser Black-backed Gull (intermedius) 2cy V336 August 26 2009, Westkapelle, the Netherlands.Ringed intermedius from Denmark, pullus 2008. This bird probably replaced all visible wing-coverts to 2nd gen in a late winter post-juvenile moult. By August, the complete moult is well ahead, indicated by fresh P6 at full length. However, the wing-covert moult, which should show now extensive new feathers in all tracts, is not corresponding this primary moult stage. There is limited moult: fresh feathers are only found in the central mc and outermost lc. Especially these new mc are most probably 3rd gen feathers now; the outer lc are often left out of the post-juvenile moult, so it is difficult to speculate about the exact generation for this group of fresh feathers. |
