Kumlien's Gull (kumlieni) 3cy, January 24 2012, St John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Picture: Bruce Mactavish.

Age 2nd winter: showing patterned 2nd generation coverts, patterned undertail coverts, limited number of grey scapulars, rounded 2nd generation primaries and dark iris.

Primary category: --

Scapulars show only a few adult-like grey feathers. Outer primaries almost white, with hardly contrasting dark wedges at the centres. Bird placed at the pale end of the spectrum, and from this image hard to separate from nominate glaucoides. Whole bird rather pale, including the washed-out buffish vermiculation of the coverts and tertials. Visible part of the tail white.
