Herring Gull (argentatus & argenteus)

(last update: February 11, 2013)

Herring Gull sub-adult, July 31 2015, Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

No ring, no provenance on origin nor on exact age. However, showing many features of local argenteus rather than Scandinavian argentatus, and set of characteristics indicate this age.

3CY bird or retarded 4CY, maybe best labelled 'sub-adult'. Pattern on secondaries in between the typical patterns of 2nd gen and 3rd gen feathers, with extensive brown on innermost secondaries indication for 3CY bird, while large white tips on old retained central secondaries better fit 4CY birds.
