Herring Gull (argentatus & argenteus)

(last update: February 11, 2013)

Common Gull canus 2nd cycle, November 10 2012, Esbjerg, Denmark. Picture: Graham Ekins.

Combination of adult-like primaries (mirrors on P9 and P10, but still more black in wingtip than full adults) and many vestiges of black in coverts. Bill with much black and dark iris. 2nd winter canus may have head streaking more mottled and blotchy. This bird lacks black ink spots on tertials and tail (but that can be found sometimes in canus).
