American Herring Gull (smithsonianus) 3cy (2nd cycle), February 09 2008, Dryden, NY, USA. Picture: Mike.

See Mike's Picasa website for many more taxa and images of American Herring Gull.

2nd cycle and 3rd cycle birds best aged on inner primaries pattern. Brown outer primaries with no mirror on p10, together with extensively patterned lower tertials (all the way to the feather edge) suggest 2nd cycle bird. Bird had extensive partial autumn moult in upper tertials, inner GC, most of the inner MC and several inner LLC.
