American Herring Gull (smithsonianus) 1106-27454 4th cycle (4CY), December 22 2016, Fox River, Kane Co., Illinois. Picture: Amar Ayyash.

Band number: #1106-27454, species: "Herring Gull", banded on June 25 2013 as fledgling near Sister Bay in Door County WI. Sister Bay, Wisconsin lies at the very north of Lake Michigan, some 390km (244 miles) north of Chicago.

Small P10 mirror, black mark on outer web of P4 and marked greater primary coverts all are typical of a Herring this age. The primary tips are already worn, much more than most adults at this time of year. This individual likely didn't breed this past summer and probably grew in its primaries earlier than breeders. Note the small P10 mirror, an age-related feature.
