American Herring Gull (smithsonianus) 4cy/5cy, February 24 2008, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Picture: Bruce Mactavish.

Mirror on P9 and P10. White innerweb on P10 about 1/2 length of visible feather, it ends in a 90 degrees angle, quite abrupt, not gradually (oblique). W-shape pattern on P5 starting to show. Small black spot on P4, not uncommon in sub-adult. Note prominent white tip, normally rather small in this age smithsonianus. Note that there are still (deep)black markings in the tail.
