American Herring Gull (smithsonianus) 5cy, February 24 2008, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Picture: Bruce Mactavish.

Full sub-terminal black band on P10. White innerweb on P10 end in 90 degrees angle, quite abrupt, not gradually (oblique). Relatively short tongue on P10 (normally on average longer for this taxon, but sub-adults show less white in the wing-tip). Small mirror on P9 confined to inner-web. Note vestiges of black on primary coverts and in the rectrices, an indication of younger adult (5cy / 6cy).
