Yellow-legged Gull michahellis group, July 27 2001, Etaples, France (50.42N,1.34E).

A 3CY with P5 full grown and P9-P10 old. The inner greater and median coverts have been shed, exposing the second generation secondaries: note the difference between the fresh black sub-terminal band on primary P5 and these brown-centred secondaries. This combination in colour of primaries and secondaries only applies to mid-summer 3CY birds. Note the secondaries in the central bird: grey centres and abraded white fringes. This bird must at least be in 4CY.
Note that 3CY start to show "winter-streaking" on the head by late July.
