photo 0559: Yellow-legged Gull michahellis 2cy, April 30 2003, Etaples, NW France (50.42N,1.34E).

A 2cy michahellis from late-April. This is an example of michahellis which shows advanced moult as it has replaced many wing-coverts and the upper tertials in the partial autumn moult as 1cy bird. In general, the back has already many grey third generation scapulars, the wing-coverts panel is a mix of abraded juvenile feathers, broad barred old second generation feathers and a few fresh second generation feathers which are grey-based. The old second generation feathers can be found in the three upper tertials, the three innermost greater coverts and most of the inner median and lower lesser coverts. For an explanation of feather tracts, check the Topography Section.
