barabensis-type 2CY, February 27 2001, Ashkar harbour, Bahrain.

Barabensis class II 1st winter.

This is probably a female barabensis, moulting the coverts and upper tertials in the right wing. The head is clean white. The 2nd generation scapulars are worn and show an extensive black centre. These kind of birds are just a little ahead of those very abraded class I barabensis. Here, in this individual as well, it’s obvious the old juvenile median coverts are very abraded, leaving only the whitish shaft at the tip. Second generation medians are clear examples of barred patterns. The combination of pure white head, extensive black centres in abraded scapulars and a start of moult in the medians is representative for class ii birds. Such birds were common in Bahrain.
