barabensis-type 2CY, February 28 2001, Manama harbour, Bahrain.

Barabensis class III 1st winter, or maybe heuglini.

In jizz this 2cy is very like all barabensis in Bahrain. The pale grey tone in the lower scapulars would be very pale for heuglini; the rounded head, thick bill, short wing normally excludes cachinnans. This 2cy bird has replaced all visible body feathers and wing coverts, except the outermost median and greater coverts and some inner median coverts, by 2nd generation feathers. The tail-moult is in progress, as can be seen: the outer two tail-feathers have been replaced. On the sides of the breast, faint streaking is still visible, as can be seen in several other barabenis, which otherwise have advanced moult. Note the short and rather thick legs, thicker than one would expect for cachinnans, (and compare to the barabensis in front, which has black sub-terminal markings running back from p10 to p3 and a well isolated mirror on p10).
