barabensis-type 2CY, February 24 2001, Ashkar harbour, Bahrain.

Barabensis class IV 1st winter or maybe heuglini.

With reduced streaking in neck, clearly two-toned bill and very white under parts. Rounded head, friendly facial expression and a snow-white head are representative for class iv barabensis. Old 2nd generation scapulars show a faint anchor pattern; 3rd generation scapulars are plain grey adult-like. Wing coverts are a combination of anchor type older coverts and a few plain grey feathers (in the lesser coverts and the medians). In the central greater coverts, moult is still going on. This advanced, pale type of gull always shows a very white under wing, a 2nd generation tail and paler inner primaries in Bahrain.
