barabensis-type 2CY, February 26 2001, Sittra parking lot, Bahrain.

Barabensis class I 1st winter or cachinnans.

In March, some cachinnans seem to have moulted a few median coverts to 2nd generation, although the moult progresses slowly. But more common is the replacement of 2nd generation for 3rd generation grey adult-like scapulars. Such scapulars (often grey centred, brown-grey at the tip and with a shaft streak are lacking in this individual, and might be a clue for identifying it as barabensis. Note the bleached exposed primaries and coverts. Mystery gull in the background is a Greater Black-headed Gull (L.ichtyaetus).
