cachinnans-type 2CY, February 27 2001, Manama harbour, Bahrain.

Barabensis class II 1st winter or maybe cachinnans.

General jizz might fit both cachinnans and barabensis, although legs are short and thick and the bird has no long primaries and rear body, so barabensis might be favoured. Another point might be the “well-situated eye”, where cachinnans’s eye may be slightly out of position”, creating a long rear head. Other clues are the advanced moult, most of the tertials are moulted, even the lower ones, moult is in progress in the lower scapulars, inner median coverts and lesser coverts. The tail and the primaries are still juvenile. Note the abraded central greater coverts; just a protruding shaft is all that’s left of the top.
