barabensis-type 2CY, February 28 2001, Manama harbour, Bahrain.

Barabensis 1st winter or heuglini.

A rather white-headed 1st winter, with intense streaking in the neck, creating a collar. The lower scapulars have strong diamond-shaped centres and a broad white fringe. Pattern on the fresh inner median and lesser coverts is club-like. The 2nd generation inner greater coverts are plain with a dark shaft. As can be seen in the upper lower scapulars, the grey tone is rather dark, maybe best fitting 1st winter heuglini. Also, the rather warm brown old wing coverts may fit heuglini. Nevertheless, the general structure (e.g. rounded head, friendly look, thumbprint in front of the eye, the very white-headed appearance) may suggest barabensis, although smaller Archangelsk type heuglini is hard to exclude.
