heuglini-type 2CY, February 27 2001, Manama harbour, Bahrain.

Barabensis 1st winter or heuglini.

In Visa Rauste’s article (Limicola,1999) he points on the bill-shape in some adult heuglini, and may refer to the ‘droopy’ bill. Active moult seems to be in progress all over the bird: in the lower scapulars, inner lesser, central median and inner greater coverts and in the tertials. Note the juvenile lesser and greater coverts: not as bleached and abraded as in most barabensis and cachinnans, rather neat with most of the fringes still present and a warm brown base. In many heuglini, 2nd generation greater coverts seem to be plain grey especially the outer feathers. Here, the 3rd greater covert already shows such a pattern. These pretty dark grey feathers might be a strong clue for heuglini.
