Steppe Gull barabensis 2CY, March 02 2001, Ashkar, Bahrain.

Barabensis class II 1st winter.

Wing covert moult: the upper tertial is missing, the second tertial is replaced for grey-brown based feather. The fringe of this feather looks pretty neat.  The inner two greater coverts have been replaced quite some time ago and these second generation feathers have wear in the fringes. Note the argentatus-like pattern in these feathers. In the median and lower lesser coverts, moult is in progress, with the inner 4 medians replaced and a few central feathers growing. The retained juvenile feathers are heavily abraded and in most feathers it's only the shaft streak what's left of the feathers. In the lesser coverts, a few central feathers have been replaced for second generation feathers with an anchor pattern. The head is white and streaking only starts in the lower neck. At first glance all upper-parts seem 2nd generation but already heavily worn. The outer wing-coverts, lower tertials and tail-feathers are still juvenile.
