Steppe Gull barabensis adult, July 18 2010, Sarykopa - Qostanay, Kazakhstan. Picture: Ross Ahmed.

Sarykopa: region 350 km west of lake Tengiz, central Kazakhstan, area with many small lakes. Birds breeding here probably belong to a transition population between cachinnans (nominate cachinnans at the Caspian Sea are about 900 km to the SW) and barabensis ('standard' barabensis from the Omsk area are about 900 km to the NE). Lake Tengiz was the location used by Liebers and Helbig to measure barabensis; while Panov and Monzikov state that this is 'about 1000 km south of the breeding range of barabensis' and Tengiz birds should be considered cachinnans.

Below: bird flying around at bare dry mud at a lake margin where also young juveniles were seen. P3-P10 still old, P1 growing. Black on outer-web of P3.
