Mew Gull canus adult, January 02 2011, Zijldijk - Warmond, The Netherlands. Picture: Maarten van Kleinwee.

Adult (after third calendar year) Mew Gull in full winter (basic) plumage. Clearly visible is the wing pattern, with black on the outer 6 primaries and mirrors on P9 and P10 (on both the inner and outer web). Note that the primaries with black in the feathers also have a black shaft. The inner primaries and secondaries are grey with a white tip. Short pale tongue on P8. Black on P6 running up along outer edge. Dark iris and bill band, neat fine streaking on head, not on breast.
