(4 images) Larus fuscus fuscus 2cy, August 07-09 2002, Tampere, Finland (61.33N 24.59E).
Another pretty advanced 2cy fuscus by early August. The scapulars are a mix of second generation and third generation feathers. A few upper scapulars are obvious brown and refer to the last second generation feathers. Most of the median coverts, the inner greater coverts, most of the lower lesser coverts and the outer lower lesser coverts have been replaced for third generation coverts. The old second generation wing-coverts are bleached and abraded at the fringes. The visible primaries are second generation. Remarkably, R1 is missing in an otherwise worn second generation tail. This appeared a strong and powerful bird in the field. Note the pale pink bill-base and the dark tip.
