(2 images) Larus fuscus fuscus 2cy, August 07 2002, Tampere, Finland (61.33N 24.59E).

Probably one of the most advanced 2cy fuscus present in Finland by early August; not only in plumage but also in soft-part colouration.

The scapulars and wing-covert moult is much in line with other 2cy birds, like C6XV. The second generation greater coverts, innermost median and outermost median coverts and randomly some lesser coverts are brown second generation feathers. The central medians and lesser coverts have been replaced for third generation feathers. The scapulars are a mix of second generation and third generation feathers and, as in many birds, the last second generation scapulars can be found in the central part of the lowest row of lower scapulars. The upper tertials are replaced for third generation.

All secondaries are second generation, P1-P2 are replaced third generation primaries, P3 is missing and P4-P10 are second generation primaries, moulted in the post juvenile moult last winter. The rectrices are all worn second generation tail-feathers.

Note the pale pink bill-base, the hint of yellow in the bill-tip and the small red spot on the gonydeal angle.
