Heermann's Gull heermannii 3rd cycle (3CY), July 31 2015, Pacific Grove, California USA. Picture: Alvaro Jaramillo.

Alvaro: You see for two years in a row essentially no Heermann's Gulls have bred in Baja California. And this is where nearly all of them breed. Last year very few first cycles were seen in California, this year so far I have not found any.
Some of the non adults were darker and browner, some greyer, some with more orange toned bills, others essentially adult like on the bill color. But I decided that all of the ones I looked at were third cycles.
The key is that the white tail tip was there, and the white trailing edge on the wings were noticeable.
Second cycle birds should have all dark tails, and dark trailing edges.
Third cycles are quite variable, some really chocolate on the head and breast, others much grayer. But consistently they have these uniform heads and neck."
