general notes on grey tones:

In Bahrain we used a 1 to 16 steps grey-scale which can be downloaded at NIKHEF Amsterdam or otherwise we provide one below. It's the same grey-scale used in e.g. Adobe Photoshop and in 16 steps it runs from 0 (black) to f (white). It differs from the Kodak Color Separation Guide, which runs from 0 (white) to 20 (black). In this section, we try to indicate the grey tone, corresponding with what we think fits best for the birds observed in Bahrain. Note however that in-depth study was not possible, as we did not examine enough birds in the hand.

We printed this grey-scale and used it in Bahrain as can be seen in some pictures. Still, the grey tones are 'printer setting dependant', but any bird classified 'between 8 and 9' in the field will fall between 8 and 9 under other light conditions as well. Light conditions in Bahrain are supposed to influence both upper- parts and paper grey-scale in a same degree.

Where a group of gulls is shown, remember grey-tone is dependent of the relative angle between birds and observers or the photographer. Also remember that adult-like feathers on immature gulls are often slightly paler than adults and freshly moulted feathers are deeper grey than bleached, worn feathers of a previous generation. Judging absolute shades of grey from photos is difficult. The problem of variable emulsion films and the processing chemicals are in our case avoided by the use of a digital camera, Sony DSC S-70. 

Thus, there was no scanning or preparation of photo-images. But the displayed images on a computer monitor are subject of personal settings, in the perceived shades of grey (and all colour), e.g. dependant of the colour setting of our monitor, which has been the reference when we created this website. We used Abode Photoshop 6.0 to adjust brightness, contrast and sharpening, but note that any of these adjustments were always applied to the entire image. Nevertheless, be careful judging colours & shades on any computer images of gulls.

RGB color chart

For displays with 256 colors the usual colour-map will contain the 216 entries from the 6x6x6 color cube, plus the 40 remaining non-overlapping values of the grey-scale and the basic colors. For such displays other colour values will be dithered, i.e. mapped to the `nearest' color-map entry. This is not always done correctly, which can easily be detected by visual inspection of the rendered colors in the examples below.
