Photo 17: 2cy LBBG, July 6 2001, IJmuiden, the Netherlands.

A bulky, robust 2cy LBBG with barred and anchored patterns on the coverts and scapulars. When the buffish base of the fresh feathers bleaches, the pattern may turn into contrasting black anchors with white bases. Most of the greater coverts are still juvenile. Especially white-headed, contrastingly patterned big male LBBGs may superficially resemble Yellow-legged Gulls (L. michahellis). By July, over 85% of michahellis show at least a few characteristic blue-grey scapulars, which are much paler than 3rd generation scapulars normally acquired by LBBG.
