Photo 1: 3cy LBBG, July 7 2001, IJmuiden, the Netherlands.

Nice composition of a 2cy LBBG (left), a metal-ringed 3cy raising the wings, a 3cy LBBG with much streaking and a sub-adult (4-5cy) LBBG on the right. Note the tremendous difference between the two 3cy birds. In the Netherlands, most of the 3cy LBBG appear as the left bird. Hence, white-headed, white under-parts, yellow bare parts (legs and bill; although a bill-band is often present) a grey saddle and in some cases the median coverts moulted to adult-like grey feathers.

When 3cy LBBG shows such extensive head streaking, the upper-parts seem to be relatively pale grey and maybe delay in moult correlates with breeding grounds. Here, p7-p10 are 2nd generation and still pretty neat and dark, while p5 is growing, which is slightly advanced in 3cy. Compare the primary moult stage to the 3cy LBBG left, which has shed p4 and is moulting p3 (average moult score for 3cy LBBG by early July).
