Photo 2: 3cy LBBG, July 7 2001, IJmuiden, the Netherlands.

A 3cy LBBG showing the inner primaries. The average moult stage for 3cy by early July: p3 growing, p4 shed, p5-p10 still old 2nd generation primaries. In some cases, advanced birds have p5 replaced and p6 shed. The 3rd generation inner primaries are completely different from 2nd generation feathers; in 3rd generation the base is adult-like grey, while the 2nd generation feathers are brown based. Together with the primaries, the primary coverts are moulted. Note the brown based second generation secondaries, beneath the greater coverts. On average, the secondaries will be shed simultaneously at the end of the July.
