Photo 11: First winter Lesser Black-backed Gull, October 01 2001, Le Portel, France.

Although quite some juvenile LBBG replace coverts in the Dutch colonies, by October it's hard to find such birds in the Netherlands. Here, a few 2nd generation coverts have grown in and two tertials have been renewed. Probably most of the 1cy LBBGs from the Netherlands (at least most of them with moulted coverts) leave the breeding ground by September and less advanced (moult wise) LBBG from Scandinavia (with later hatched juveniles) join local groups. It may be expected these Scandinavian intermedius LBBGs have a delay in moult timing. (in the background: a juvenile GBBG, L. marinus).
