Photo 2: LBBG May 11 2001, Naaktstrand Maasvlakte, the Netherlands.
First summer LBBG showing abraded second generation scapulars and mantle. In the lower scapulars some recently moulted dark feathers can be seen. These scapulars show a brown anchor pattern on a greyish base, typical in first type LBBG. The grey base may turn paler by mid summer. All the wing coverts are juvenile, as are the tertials and the tail. This is the common moult stage for graellsii by mid May in the Netherlands and applies to most (local) birds.
