Photo 1: LBBG sub-adult, January 05, 2001, Westkapelle, the Netherlands.
Probably a third winter bird (now 4cy by
January), most probably of the race
intermedius
since its jizz is short-legged (especially the tibia) and long-winged
(although it looks somewhat robust where many of the present intermedius
may appear very gently built). Note the relatively short P9-P10 projection with
P10 hardly longer than P9.
The new primaries show relatively small white tips and P10 has only a small mirror, just visible in the far wing.
P4-P5 have an obvious visible paler grey end.
The bill is typical for third winter, with a yellow tip, much black on the
upper mandible but a hint of a red gonydeal angle as well, though mostly
obscured by the bill-band. The legs show a pinkish hue, typical for immature
LBBG, as third winters are.
In the upper-parts, the brown older feathers can be detected between the
new grey ones.
As in many sub-adults, the development of a "executioner's hood"
(the hooded appearance created by extensive streaking on head and upper breast
which is sharply demarcated) is
strong.
