Photo 2: LBBG sub-adult, January 05, 2001, Westkapelle, the Netherlands.
Probably a fourth winter (5cy) bird, presumably of the race
intermedius. It's a rather neckless, short-legged, delicately built
individual. The new primaries have relatively small white tips and don't appear typically
adult-like (although one has to be careful to use this feature in ageing LBBG's,
since some intermedius
populations might well develop only small white tips in adult freshly
moulted primaries, remaining sub-adult in their look).
P10 has only a small mirror. The bill is yellow but with a hint of
dark bill-band. Red on the gonydeal angle is well visible.
Iris and legs are pretty adult-like already and the extensive streaking
on head and upper breast create an "executioner's hood".
