Photo 6: LBBG 2cy, June 17 2001, Naaktstrand - Maasvlakte, the Netherlands.
A second type 2cy LBBG with head and under-parts clouded, with many dark markings,
giving a smudgy appearance. The bill is almost all dark.
There are no juvenile feathers in the scapulars and mantle; they are all at
least second generation feathers. It's a mix of feathers moulted last autumn and a few
moulted after returning in the Netherlands (those last moulted may be of third generation). The new
scapulars are worn as well, except one that shows a brown centre, black anchor
patterned and a pale fringe.
The lesser coverts are barred, juvenile, except three central feathers that were
probably moulted last autumn. In the median coverts, #1 to #3 are second generation and
moulted last autumn, #4 & #5 are growing and are dark grey, almost black,
while #6 is still juvenile. Number 7 to #13 are growing, almost black and the outermost
are
juvenile. In the greater coverts moult is in progress as well: #1 is
growing, #2 & #3 are second generation and probably moulted last year, #4 is
missing and #5
towards the outer coverts are all abraded juvenile. In the tertials, #3 to
#6 (lowest tertials) are juvenile, the upper tertials were replaced and #1 still growing. The tail is all
juvenile, more in line with the first type LBBG.
In the primaries, P1-P2 are missing, P3-P10 are juvenile.
In general, this bird belongs to the common Dutch second type as explained in the in 2cy LBBG in May classification.
