The pigmentation is really deep dark grey on P9. Wingtip darkness score: 3 - blackish grey (Estimated Kodak 14-17). In the study by Howell & Mactavish, about 5% of Kumlien's Gulls in New Foundland belong to this category, see Table 1.

Pigmentation on P6-P10, with small triangle on P6, broken band on P7 and full band on P8. Wingtip scoring for dark markings on P5-P10: 0-2-3-4-3-1. See Plate 1 for explanation.

Wingtip pattern category: Type K, Stage 4, darker grey or more extensive grey marks on the outer five primaries with complete subterminal bands on zero to three primaries. See primary patterns for explanation. In the study by Howell & Mactavish, about 55% of Kumlien's Gulls in New Foundland belong to this category, see Table 2.

Iris colour variation: Iris colour variation: 1.5 - greenish or yellowish, extensively mottled brown. In the study by Howell & Mactavish, only 4% of the Kumlien's Gulls in New Foundland belong to this category, see Table 3. Classification on speckling: class 3 - speckling 5%-10%.

Much of an adult in plumage; an open-wing shot may reveal a few dark markings on primary coverts, as well as some dark fringes on some of the underwing coverts.

Compare wingtip to 3rd cycle: the broken band on P6 (in 3rd cycle) is now only a black spot on the outerweb. The bands on P7-P9 are now broken by the shaft.
