A 2cy fuscus showing three generations of primaries. In the left wing, P1 is of third generation, P2-7 of second generation and P8-10 are juvenile; P5 is broken off. In the right wing the moult score is similar, but P1 is missing/growing and here P4 seems to be damaged. The tail and secondaries are old second generation feathers. The most likely moult scenario is that this bird returned to Europe with the tail, secondaries and P1-7 renewed on the wintering grounds. Judging from the rather poor state of the primaries, instead of continuing at P8 it recommenced at P1. For fuscus, this bird is large and powerfully built (compare to the Herring Gull in plate 4), but the pattern and colouration of the scapulars and wing coverts fit this taxon very well indeed.
