Lesser Black-backed Gull (graellsii) hybrid Y.BVA adult, May 2015 - April 2021, IJmuiden, the Netherlands. Picture: Mars Muusse & Maarten van Kleinwee.

Ringed as 4CY in breeding season 2015 at Forteiland, IJmuiden. Ringed by Fred Cottaar ringing team.
Supposed hybrid Lesser Black-backed Gull x Yellow-legged Gull (michahellis).

In 2015, Yellow-legged Gull hybrids were present at Forteiland colony.
Both color-ringed birds returned and occupied the same territory as in 2014, a few dozen meters apart! YAHH was again paired with a color ringed Lesser Black-backed Gull YASC.
This was the fifth year this couple had formed a couple. 3 eggs were laid and 2 chicks fledged, both of which could be color ringed (YBWN and YBWP).

YBAM had a nest for the third consecutive year at the same location with an unringed Lesser Black-backed Gull. This couple also had 3 eggs, but no chicks were fledged.

Remarkably, a third year bird appeared close to the territories of the other hybrids in 2014. This year he could be found in the same territory and we could catch him on the nest (2 eggs).
This bird was also provided with a color ring: YBVA. He was paired with a Lesser Black-backed Gull. The chicks disappeared soon after hatching.
Interestingly, all three hybrids are males. The intriguing question remains: are they related?

Partner is g-Y.CTX, which may have been the unringed partner already in 2016-2018. Faithful pair, both in partner choice and location, breeding at the very same spot in the colony back-to-back seasons, until g-Y.BVA suddenly didn't turn up anymore after May 30 2023. Despite being single parent, g-Y.CTX managed to raise both chicks in 2023 (very unusual).
