4cy E056 E,
May 13 2002, Missouriweg, Maasvlakte, the Netherlands (51.59N,04.02E).
A local 4cy bird, ringed E056 left red. Ringed at the nest at Maasvlakte July 17 1999, now in it's 4cy (3rd summer). The tail consists of third generation rectrices but is completely white. The scapulars are adult-like grey, though a few feathers show an indistinct paler brown hue. Tertials 1-2 are grey, tertials 3-4 have a brown base and lack the white tip. The greater coverts: #1-2 are brownish, #3 is grey, #4 is old brown, #5 is fresh grey, #6-8 are old brown, #9 is fresh grey, #10 is brown-grey, #11 fresh grey, #12-13 are brown-grey, #14 and the outer visible outer greater coverts are fresh grey. The median coverts: #1 is fresh dark grey, #2 is old brown, #3 is fresh dark grey, #4-5 are old pale brown, #6-7 are brown-grey, #8 is old brown, #9 is fresh grey, #10-13 are brown-grey, #14 and the visible outer medians are fresh grey. The lower lesser coverts have a similar pattern as the median coverts. The lower coverts are immature, with a pale brown fringe in the carpal edge. The under-parts and the head are white. The legs are pale yellow and there is an obvious though diffuse bill-band. The black on the bill is confined to the upper mandible and doesn't run back along the culmen towards the base. The red gonydeal spot is confined to the lower mandible. The mirror on P10 can hardly be called a real mirror; it's more a diffuse white line along the shaft streak, a few inches from the tip. The inner-hand has the typical immature characteristics, with P4-P5 having a brownish inner-web and P4 has extensive sub-terminal black marking on the outer-web, running to the base along the shaft. P6 has a white tip, but P7-P10 lack white tips on the primaries. A few red-coloured immatures in 2cy, 3cy and 4cy return to the breeding sites in summer. Another 4cy can be seen here. |
