American Herring Gull (smithsonianus) 1cy, October 08 2006, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Picture: Bruce Mactavish.Bird with most scapulars replaced for 2nd generation fearthers. Moult score: upper scapulars = 75-99%, lower scapulars = 1-25%, total scapulars = 50-75%. New scapulars with ill-defined anchor shape and thin transversal bars. Note pale base of bill, and lack of obvious bar on greater coverts (rather more argenteus like, piano-key pattern).
