American Herring Gull (smithsonianus) sub-adult, February 02 2005, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Picture: Jeff Poklen.

See this website by Jeff, showing West coast birds mostly.

East coast bird probably in near-adult plumage (as there is very much black on the bill and dark markings in the primary coverts), showing bold winter streaking. Relatively short tongue on P10 (<1/2 of visible length of feather) but sharp corner at the end. Together with 3cy Kumlien's Gull.
