Larus armenicus 3cy, 18 August 2010, Maagan Michael, Israel. Picture: Amir Ben Dov. Bird in active complete moult. P4 fully grown, P5 about half way its final length, P7-P10 still old second generation. Old outer primaries and several of the lesser coverts very worn and bleached. New feathers in wing coverts, mantle and scapulars adult-like grey. This individual follows the common moult sequence in large gulls, with the median covert row now replaced and the outer and central greater coverts missing. Primary moult has arrived at P4, and therefore all secondaries and rectrices are still present. Note that the median covert row is not a continuum, but there are still a few very old feathers still present. These old feathers were probably the feathers replaced in the partial autumn moult and still relatively fresh (when compared to adjacent feathers). Such feathers are often left out of the moult sequence, only to be moulted a bit later.
