Simultaneously, birds finish the moult in the rectrices and finally the gap in the central secondaries will close as well. Common moult stage by mid October is: P7 fully grown, with no old primaries left.
P7 fully grown, P8 halfway in length. S1-S3 replaced/growing. Gap in central secondaries and a small group of old feathers still present (S13-S18 appr.) in the right wing. In the left wing (bottom picture) there is a discontinuity in the secondary moult sequence.
