Lesser Black-backed Gull (graellsii & intermedius)

LBBG 2cy January 04 2002, Le Portel / Boulogne-sur-Mer, France (50.42N,1.34E). 

LBBG may include substantial numbers of wing-coverts in the partial moult on the wintering grounds. Returning 2cy LBBG in spring may have all visible wing-coverts replaced for second generation feathers, but this individual follows the 'classic' moult strategy as described for graellsii, in which only head feathers, scapulars, mantle and some body feathers are replaced in the partial winter moult.
