Western Gull occidentalis 1st cycle (2CY), May 24 2017, Monterey, California, USA. Picture: John Cant.

Bird awkward to age, with adult-like fresh inner primaries, and overall grey scapular region and immaculate white uppertail coverts may suggest 2nd cycle. But with pointed outer primaries (juvenile) and a 1st cycle bird, based on the juvenile secondaries. Note also bill parttern. An advanced 1st cycle; it surely is ahead in its moult stage compared to other birds photographed on the same day. A closer look at the inner primaries reveal sub-terminal patterning near the tips of P2-P4 and P1 is not plain grey, but a bit shady grey.
Complete moult started, P1-P3 new, P4 growing, P7-P10 old. All secondaries and rectrices old.
