Western Gull occidentalis ... pre-basic moult into 5th cycle (5CY), August 30 2014, Westport, Grays Harbor Co., Washington. Picture: Jon Anderson.

All of the banded WEGUs with plain color bands, found in California in the past have been from the Southeast Farallon Islands. For every year, they start using a new colour for that cohort. This is a bird from year 'BLACK' which corresponds to the 2010 cohort. Hatch Year: HY2010.

Bird in complete moult, outer primaries still old, P5/P8. It had a Black plastic band on its right leg. Left leg had a USFWS band, final 2 digits were ...71. Point Reyes Bird Observatory (now called Point Blue Conservation Science) program leader Russ Bradley reports: This is not enough info to id the individual but the black right, metal left means the bird is a 4 year old. It was banded as a chick on Southeast Farallon Island in the summer of 2010. There are no other groups doing large scale color banding (1 color, 1 metal – no axillary markers) for Western Gulls.
