Great Black-backed Gull(Larus marinus) 2cy: April 15 2001, IJmuiden, the Netherlands (52.27 N, 4.33 E).The head feathers, body plumage and scapulars have been replaced for second generation feathers in the partial spring moult. Note the worn fringes of the coverts and tertials; the white notches are totally worn away. The bill turns paler at the base. |
