Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus) 2cy: February 09 2003, Le Portel - Boulogne sur Mer, France (50.42 N - 01.34 E).

Note the juvenile wing-coverts and tertials which show only little wear with most of the paler parts still present. The recently moulted second generation lower scapulars do not show the typical marinus-pattern, but rather ordinary anchor patterns with a broad pale fringe and a buffish base. The base of the lower mandible starts to turn paler.
