Presumed adult Thayer's Gull (thayeri) at the paler end of the spectrum for this taxon. Pictures: Steve Rottenborn.

Kumlien's Gull in the dark end of the spectrum come very close to Thayer's Gull, especially birds in the paler end of the thayeri spectrum. Below, three images of two birds which are presumed Thayer's, yet the melanism in the wing-tip is dark grey, not blackish.

This would be a "Stage 4" bird, with darker grey or more extensive grey marks on the outer five primaries with complete subterminal bands on zero to three primaries. This stage 4 was scored in 55% of the adult Kumlien's at Newfoundland in the research by Howell & Mactavish. For explanation, see chart.
