Nelson's Gull hyperboreus x smithsonianus 1st cycle (1CY), December 21 2008, Colma, CA. Picture: Cynthia Chau.Visit: Dominik Mosur's Picture on Flickr. The nicely bicolored bill points to Glaucous and the primaries are very pale. It's a big bird and head shape is odd for pure Glaucous, Some similarity to Thayer's Gull, but HYBRID GLAUCOUS GULL X AMERICAN HERRING GULL larger with longer and stouter bill that often has brighter pinkish basally. Wingtip and tail pattern might resemble Thayer’s, but range of variation poorly known; should be separable by size and structure, especially bill. |
