Iris scoring is 0.0, iris uniformly dark brown; which is found in 2% of Thayer's Gull (see HERE). Note that at very close range, there will always be detailed speckling, shifting the category from uniformly to peppered. Scoring method (video) by Howell & Elliott probably did not allow such extreme close-ups and many ornithologists in field observations would call such irides uniformly dark.
