cachinnans plumages

Larus cachinnans 1cy, November 03 2007, Westkapelle, the Netherlands. Picture: Ies Meulmeester.

A small 1cy Caspian Gull. Note the very small build, slender bill and very short wings. A lot of median and lesser coverts are dropped and some are recently replaced by second generation coverts. Note the barring on the (inner) greater coverts. The outermost rectrice on the left-side is renewed by a second generation feather. Nearly all under-wing coverts and the axillary feathers are dark fine marked. Note the typical inner primary pattern, note also the very pale tips on the inner webs of p2-p4 and the 'apical spots' on these primaries.
